Props: Mass Effect 3 Riffle

Harrison Krix of Volpin Props has created another custom-made piece of Mass Effect weaponry to add to his video game arsenal! More information and photos about this build found here.

Project: Elderly Superheroes

It must be tough being a superhero in this economy. It’s not like the job market is teeming with positions that require a person to wear spandex, and I would guess it’s a lot harder to gallivant across city rooftops when you have arthritis and bad knees. Behance has imagined what superheroes (and their nemeses) do to occupy their time once they qualify for AARP.

Project: Stormtrooper Walks for a Good Cause

Aussie Stormtrooper Paul French is currently walking across Australia, from Perth to Sydney (a total of 4100 km or 2547 miles,) to raise mondy for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
For more than 25 years, Starlight Children’s Foundation has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses and life-altering injuries by providing entertainment, education and family activities that help them cope with the pain, fear and isolation of prolonged illness.
That stormtrooper suit sure is a great attention grabber, but it’s probably not the most comfortable outfit to walk 4100 kilometers in. Here’s a picture gallery of French as he walks through Australia in his suit.

Video: Victoria Schmidt, Cosplayer Extraordinare

Victoria Schmidt has been visiting Comic Con in drag every year since 1999.  This video celebrates the hard work and thought that Schmidt puts in to her costumes... just after they stop mocking her with the crazy lady music.

Schmidt isn't stopping anytime soon, either. “I can’t wait to be sixty or seventy or something, so I can do characters like Professor McGonagall or Mon Mothma… I know I can keep on doing it. Age, actually, only makes it better.”

Video: Anime Expo 2011

Anime Expo 2011 (DD) - 02

This year’s edition of Anime Expo 2011 was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center July 1 - 4. As usual, the crowd was packed with attendees dressed in an amazing array of costumes. This set of videos contains many of them posing in character for the camera. The second video is the best, which is why I've posted it first. Maybe it's the soundtrack, maybe it's just the uber-cute girls. Either way, all four are worth watching.

Video: Cosplay Fever: Raise Your Glass

This is how big a geek I am. Cleaning out my desktop this morning, I realized that I had over thirty cosplay lip sync videos laying around. I don't think most people have even seen a cosplay-themed lip sync video, much less gone through the work of downloading a mess of them locally. Anyhoo... here's one of the latest to surface: Cosplay Fever: Raise Your Glass.

Project: Dark Holiday

Photographer Nick Presniakov has a healthy sense of humor. His Dark Holiday series follows everyone’s favorite Sith Lord on vacation; from vegging at the hotel to taking a Segway stroll down the bike lane, Darth Vader knows how to take it easy as well as any of us.

Surfing Trooper

“In time you will call *me* master” (Maqai, Fiji)

Tutorial: How to make a Duct Tape Shield

Here's a tutorial from Instructable demonstrating how to make Captain America's shield from duct tape and a bit of cardboard. It's one of a series on how to make a custom shields made from odds and ends.

Props: Cassandra’s Gear from Soul Calibur

The Soul Calibur series stands apart from other fighting series, such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Tekken, in its focus on weapon-based combat rather than hand-to-hand matches. That makes it a particularly challenging subject for cosplay and much more impressive when someone manages to pull it off.

Artist Harisson Krix of Volpin Props has recently been blogging about his work on creating replicas of Cassandra's Digamma SwordPauldrons, and Shield.  As you can see below, he's managed to make a remarkably realistic likeness.

Sometimes it’s a little hard for me to share what my HP tattoo means to be since it’s so personal, but I feel like we all have such a similar story in that HP has done something for each every one of us.

i don’t really think i can ever express in words what this tattoo means & represents for me. it’s a mixture of my childhood, me growing up, and what i hope for myself in the future. it is also a tribute to something that in a sense, saved my life.

This was right after it was done. Since then it’s been touched up and such. It’s been over a year and a half since I’ve gotten it and it still means as much to me as when I first got it.

This is my Harry Potter tattoo across the top of my back!

One of my favorite scenes from Harry Potter is during Half-Blood Prince when Hermione casts the Oppugno spell and sets the yellow birds chasing after Ron after she gets upset seeing him with Lavender Brown. My sister designed it for me and then, my tattoo artist Harry drew up his own version and this is what it came to be!

My friend Candi turned 18 a few days ago, and as everyone usually does, decided to get a tattoo. She decided to get the golden snitch from the Harry Potter books to symbolize her love for the series as well as for the meaning of the "I open at the close" quote. I think it turned out very well.

It’s not finished yet, but this was the original idea that popped in my head. first it was just the DH triangle but it wasn’t ‘me’ enough so hence the flower! a few errors but my brother did it and he’s still learning…

Mass Effect 2

Jack (from Mass Effect 2)
Source: Jia Jem
A close friend commanded that I cosplay Jack. Strangely, a few other friends independently suggested I cosplay her, too. I shaved my head many years ago for fun, so I suspect whenever my friends see a bald chick costume they automatically think of me. I don’t think I particularly resemble Jack. That was the biggest challenge for me with this cosplay. I don’t fancy myself a model or actress. This cosplay required a lot of attitude to bring the character out. It’s nice to know that even cosplaying as long as I have, I can still feel nervous about cosplay…

Tattoo: Portal Turret

This is a turret from Portal. This specific one, for those of you who have played Portal 2, is the one who escaped the production line.

The life of a turret is simple. They are built, tested, put in a box, removed from the box, recycled, used as parts for a new turret. A never ending cycle. But one got away, and when you find him, he says, “I’m different”. He looks like all the others, but somehow, he ended up different.

The words in the background don’t really say anything, I told the artist to do whatever he wanted, it just had to be garbled and gibberish. Along with the little red hearts, the background was inspired by one of the walls of a rat’s den.

Tattoo: Starry Night over the Gotham City

This is my brand new tattoo called “Starry Night over the Gotham City” which was made by Dominika Gardocka i Skorpion Sosnowiec tattoo studio in Poland. This is our combined effort of Dominika’s talent and my post-modern brain and of course the Intetnet which was huge help and inspiration.

I’d like to dedicate it to all adults who don’t feel so grown up :)
